Diamond Hill Hike Ireland

Diamond Hill is one of Ireland’s best-known hikes, located in Connemara National Park to the west of Ireland. When driving the Wild Atlantic Way you don’t even have to take a detour, it’s on route.

Where to start

The start point of this 2-2,5 hour walk is at a visitor center just minutes off the N59 (part of the Wild Atlantic Way). This is where you’ll park your car and, if you feel like it, you can pay a visit to the visitor center.

The path is pretty straight forward and well maintained. Look for a signboard to inspect the trails and directions.

3 routes

You’ll have a three options, depending on your wishes.

  • 1. Yellow trial: 1,5 kilometer. Very easy.

  • 2. Blue trial: 3 kilometer. Easy.

  • 3. Red trial: 3,7 kilometer. Moderate to hard (climbing stairs).

The red trial on Diamond Hill can only be started around halfway on the blue trial. Meaning you’ll need to walk the blue trial to start the red one. This will sum up to 6,7 kilometer in total.

Most people, like myself, combine the blue and red trials, which will take about 2-2,5 hours to complete. If you don’t hike often, or want to take it slow, calculate a maximum of 3 hours to get back.

The hike is stunning, both in rainy and sunny conditions. The path is reliable during heavy rain, but make sure you have some grip on your shoes for the red trial. However, I would recommend this hike in sunny and clear weather as the view from the red trial will be absolutely stunning.

Have fun hiking!

Cheers, Mike
