things to do in helmond, land van de peel

Land van de Peel is a collaboration between six townships in the area of Eindhoven. Helmond is one of these townships. In this blog I’ll guide you through some of the best things to do in this special part of The Netherlands.

Nationaal park de groote Peel

National park De Groote Peel covers around 30.000 hectares across both Noord-Brabant and Limburg. This area used to be large in peat, and nowadays it’s mostly forest, heath and swamps.

You can start your visit at Buitencentrum De Pelen.

During your walk, you can find plenty about the history of this area. As well as a couple of panorama spots and wooden walkways. This place is ideal to take it slow and enjoy the surroundings.

Kasteel Asten

Castle Asten is famously known for hunting witches. Through time, the castle became a ruin twice. The last time after being bombed during war.

Today, your only able to visit the castle with a guide. The reason behind this is that there are around 50 people living within the outer gates of the castle. To not disturb them to much, you must make an appointment. However, every Sunday morning (during the summer period, at least) there is a free guided tour.

Citywalk through Helmond

The city center of Helmond boasts a lot of interesting old and new architecture, murals and the city castle. Make sure to check out Het Speelhuis (theater) and the 18 Cubical houses during your visit!

De Cacaofabriek

The Cacaofabriek, translated to “The Chocolate Factory”. And, unsurprisingly, it used to be an actual chocolate factory. Around 10 years ago it was transformed to a cultural center with expo’s, films and a chocolate shop!

City Brewery Deftige Aap

Is it afternoon yet? Bring a visit to city brewery Deftige Aap in the city center. This brewery offers a wide variety of craft beers, as well as their own distillery and shop next door.

Interested in a guided tour? Just ask at the bar ;)

Helmond castle / museum

The castle of Helmond is transformed into a museum displaying the varying interiors of the castle throughout the centuries. The almost 700 years old castle is very well preserved and beautiful to walk around in.

Have fun during your visit!

Cheers, Mike
