Doubtful Sound daytrip from queenstown

Imagine Milford Sound but bigger, more diverse landscapes and less touristic, welcome to Doubtful Sound. In this article I’ll tell you about Doubtful Sound and taking a daytrip from Queenstown or elsewhere.

Doubtful sound

In comparison to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound is located far more south at the height of Te Anau. See the map below.

Doubtful Sound cannot be reached by car, as the fiord is located outside of passable roads. The trip includes two boat trips because of this; first one to pass Lake Manapouri, second a trip throughout the fiords of Doubtful Sound. In-between the two boats, you’ll find yourself on a bus transfer.

Doubtful Sound is the wettest place on the planet, more rain falls here than in the Amazon rain forest. Moreover, Doubtful Sound is the deepest fiord of New Zealand. The fiord has steeps walls with green flora closing in from all sides. It’s incredibly impressive, especially on a moody day.

In comparison with Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound doesn’t have a permanent waterfall. Though, on days with heavy rain, hundreds of smaller waterfalls can be spotted everywhere in the fiord.

Daytour

There are multiple ways of getting onto the daytour to Doubtful Sound. The organization you should be looking for is called “RealNZ”. Their trip departs from Manapouri.

RealNZ offers their Doubtful Sound tours directly on their website. However, if you can’t come to Manapouri by yourself, you might want to consider a pickup. Personally, I booked my trip with getyourguide.com. The trip offered a pick-up and drop-off in Queenstown.

The itinerary will be day-filling counting to almost 13 hours (of which almost 3 hours in Doubtful Sound), so be prepared. Find the trip here: Doubtful Sound daytrip from Queenstown.

Have a good trip over there!

Cheers, Mike
